PE and Sport

Intent

Physical Education (PE) at Kippax Ash Tree Primary School develops pupils' knowledge, skills and competences in a range of different sports and physical activities. We recognise the importance of PE on children’s health and wellbeing and strive to provide high quality teaching and learning experiences to enable every child to achieve their personal best. We aim for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and able to make informed decisions in order to lead healthy, active lives. Children participate in competitive sport for both enjoyment and development and are encouraged to display their ‘Ash Tree’ values demonstrating respect and sportsmanship towards their opponents.

Implementation

PE is taught twice a week covering two different aspects of physical activity or sport per half term. Teachers plan their lessons following long term plans to ensure coverage of a variety of sports and opportunities for continued development.

We provide children with opportunities to participate in a variety of sport / physical activity focused enrichment activities after school to increase enjoyment and participation for all.
Kippax Ash Tree children participate and compete in many inter-school and intra-school competitions and events as part of the Brigshaw Learning Partnership Trust. Competitions include Athletics, Swimming Galas, Badminton, Paralympic Games, Girls and Boys Football, Tag Rugby and Netball. These experiences provide children with opportunities to experience positive competition and to develop good sporting attitudes.

Children attend swimming lessons in Year 4 and 6. Swimming is an important life skill, we aspire for all children to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25 metres.
Year 6 children have the responsibility of sports coaches during break times, developing their leadership skills, organising and officiating their activities, evaluating others performance for areas of improvement and motivating and instilling positive sporting attitude in their participants.

Impact

At Kippax Ash Tree Primary school, P.E is taught to promote enjoyment and a lifelong love of sport and physical activity for all, where children can make informed choices about how participating in physical activity enables a healthy activity lifestyle and increased physical and mental wellbeing. We hope that children enjoy PE and develop a love of sport so that they continue to pursue this outside of school and in their future lives. Opportunities to compete in sport and physical activity builds character and helps to embed values such as tolerance, equality and accountability.
