The Purpose of Home Visits

We carry out home visits for new starters in Nursery and Reception to help children and families feel confident and supported as they begin school. Meeting you and your child in your own home allows us to get to know your child in a familiar, comfortable setting, and gives you the chance to share important information about their interests, routines, and needs. It also gives your child the opportunity to meet their teacher in a relaxed environment, which helps them feel secure and excited about starting school. Home visits are an important way for us to build strong, trusting relationships with families and work together to support your child’s learning, wellbeing, and smooth transition into school life.

Home visits at Kippax Ash Tree Primary School

Once we know a family has accepted a place in our Nursery or Reception we will arrange a home visit. This will take place in term before the child starts with us. Every child is visited by two staff members together where we share our ‘Home School Commitment’. We clearly communicate what is expected of all three parties in the relationship between school, child and family. Vitally it provides a space for us to share our expectations, so everyone is starting to work as a team even before the child arrives at school for the first time. During these visits staff spend time with each family, explaining the ‘why’ behind our routines and expectations. Parents, child and teachers all make commitments to each other. For example:

  • Parents commit to supporting healthy routines at home
  • Pupils commit to striving for their best
  • Teachers commit to nurturing each child’s potential

We all sign the home school commitment which shows that we will do whatever it takes to ensure that every child achieves and thrives during their time at our school.
